The study, published online Monday by the journal Pediatrics, found watching SpongeBob cartoon cuts negatively affected the attention span of 4-year-olds'. Watching a PBS cartoon more realistic does not.
These days, children usually begin watching television at the age of 4 months, and they watch a lot of it, Dr. Dimitri Christakis wrote in a commentary accompanying the study.
Although the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under age 2 not watch television, the group said the number is not a problem limited to children older as long as it is no more than 1-2 hours a day educational programs.
The quality of what they consider is as important as quantity, Christakis, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital, said in an interview.
"Most parents are too worried about how much TV their children watch and not enough about what they watch," he said. "This is not about changing the TV off. It's about changing the channel."
